PROGRESS REPORT

10 MARCH 2006

Steps / actions taken by AMID to date, in accordance with the Matrix:

CODE OF CONDUCT AND THE PROMOTION OF RIDER AND  ECO AWARENESS TRAINING BY ACCREDITED TRAINERS:
  1. Most of the AMID Members provide a free training course with the purchase of a new Quad from any of their authorised Dealerships.
  2. The course focuses on safe and correct operation and maintenance of units, as well as eco awareness principles.
  3. AMID furnished a press release to the media on 14 11 2005, wherein I recommended that all service providers of Off Road Rider Training courses contact SANOTA, in order to partake and provide input. (copy attached for ease of reference).
PROMOTION AND SUPPORT OF ACCREDITED TRAILS:
  1. AMID will fully support and promote accredited trails once this matter has been evaluated and finalised.
  2. In response to a recent reader`s letter addressed to "Drive Out", where I was approached for comment, I remarked that Quad riders had no excuse to ride in areas where they caused noise pollution and damage to sensitive areas, as Quad tracks, trails and tours are advertised in all Quad related magazines.
  3. Several Tour Operators also arrange regular planned and controlled rides for Quad owners, in permitted areas.
  4. The commonly heard complaint that Quad owners have "nowhere to ride",  is thus not accurate.
PROMOTION OF THE CONCEPT OF ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE OFF-ROAD RIDING TECHNIQUES:
  1. An AMID Off Road riding Code of Conduct has been drafted, approved by the Members, quotes obtained for printing of posters, and these are currently in the process of being printed.  (copy attached for your information).
  2. Posters will be ready for distribution during March 2006, whereafter it will be displayed in all AMID Member Dealerships, in order to create awareness.
  3. AMID has also been in discussion and entered into an Agreement with well known personality, journalist and ex racing champion, Mr. Dave Petersen, presenter of the 2 Wheels / Quad Corner TV Programme on Monday evenings, where emphasis is placed on responsible rider behaviour, awareness and protection of the environment.
  4. AMID also held talks with some of the more well known magazine editors, informing them of developments and the need to promote and encourage responsible riding techniques / behaviour. Several supporting articles have already appeared in Magazines such as Quad SA, Enduro World and Dirt and Quad.
PROMOTION OF ENVIRONMENTALLY CORRECT ADVERSTISING:
  1. The Members have all agreed and undertaken to comply and adhere to responsible advertising campaigns.
  2. Also refer to my comment above, regarding the Quad Corner TV Programme.

SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE RELATED ACTIVITIES THAT WILL IMPACT POSITIVELY ON REGIONAL SOCIAL UPLIFTMENT:

  1. Most of my Members are part of huge and highly respected Groups, who have been and are, at the forefront of social upliftment initiatives and projects.
  2. The Members have been furnished with the proposed Matrix, and they all agreed / undertook to support and encourage such related activities.

INVESTIGATE AND SUPPORT THE CONCEPT OF A GRADING AND LICENSING SYSTEM FOR RIDERS AND TRAILS:

  1. AMID has already indicated co operation and support for the abovementioned concept.
  2. In this regard, contact details of relevant parties at the AA have been furnished to Mr. Glyn Demmer, who subsequently met with the AA representatives.
  3. During the Workshop in George, AMID confirmed it`s existing / current negotiations with the SABS and Department of Transport, in endeavours to negotiate a situation where all Quads and Off-Road Motorcycles have to be registered. The DEAT representatives agreed with the course of action, as identification of culprits / transgressors is widely considered to be crucial in stopping wanton destruction of eco sensitive areas.
In view of the aforementioned, cognisance can be taken of the fact that AMID has taken its responsibility very seriously and that no time has been wasted in implementing and following the guidelines reflected in the Matrix.
