Unit Standards

Unit Standard Status

The Unit Standards have been registered and are available on the SAQA website -

http://allqs.saqa.org.za/showUnitStandard.php?id=254135
http://allqs.saqa.org.za/showUnitStandard.php?id=254154

In early February, the following e-mail was received from SAQA’s Directorate Standard Setting and Development -

“The two 4WD unit standards (254135 and 254154) are available on the SAQA website and should be included in the National Certificate: Professional Driving L3, ID 50285 by 3 March 2009.  The Professional Driving qualification was allocated to TETA.  Attempts are also being made to have them included in THETA related qualifications.  I am not aware of any MERSETA related qualifications that should be considered for inclusion.  You are most welcome to make suggestions for such inclusions.

You have to approach your current SETA regarding the accreditation procedure.  Unfortunately SETAs differ in their accreditation requirements. You will find links to the SETA ETQAs on our website.”

As stated in the e-mail, should you wish to seek accreditation as an Instructor and/or as an accredited Training Facility, you must liaise with the SETA relevant to your industry.  Details of the SETA’s are available on the SAQA website (www.saqa.org.za).

To everyone who has assisted and contributed during this process, we say thank you.

Governance and environmental impact management

... The concept of self or co-regulation will be tested through an initiative of the off-road industry. Under the leadership of the National Off-road Working Group (NOW), a strategy for co-regulation has been formulated that can be used as an example for others to follow.

Today I am proud to say that unilateral government action might not be necessary, as representatives of the sector have come forward with a highly professional and responsible response. They have succeeded in formulating a representative strategy that opens the way for co-regulation. I am pleased to announce that the above strategy has been approved and it will be launched during the first quarter of 2009.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders who have been involved in these processes over a number of years for their hard work. Without the partnerships we have forged, much of the work we have done in order to safeguard our environment would not have been possible.
